Dehydration is a topic that I can readily identify with at this time as my wonderful 80 year old mother has been fighting cancer for two years now and is attempting her third round of chemotherapy, but has recently been hospitalized from complications due to severe dehydration. It is very important for people fighting cancer to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of dehydration before it leads to serious health issues.
People taking chemotherapy often have several side effects such as vomiting and diarrhea and this can lead to dehydration. If this occurs, they should be closely monitored before the dehydration becomes severe.
The definition of dehydration is the loss of body fluids that can occur because of vomiting, diarrhea, sweating heavily, and being exposed to the sun for long periods of time. These fluids are essential for our bodies to work properly and without them, our bodies cannot function the way they are supposed to.
There are several signs of dehydration such as the following:
* dizziness, general feeling of weakness
* less urine output
* dry mouth
* thirst
* difficulty in swallowing dry foods
* dry skin/lips
If you experience a small amount of urine output or none at all during a 12 hour time period or if your urine is dark in color or you experience dizziness or fainting when you stand up, you should call your doctor and get checked. Dehydration can also effect your mind and throw you into a state of confusion.
One of the best ways to prevent dehydration is to try to drink plenty of fluids. This may sound simple, but when you are fighting nausea and diarrhea,, it can become a difficult task to drink properly. Try to drink small amounts to a time or a few ounces of clear liquid every 15 to 30 minutes until you are able to keep larger amounts down. Try ice chunks as they can be good for a dry mouth and also for small amounts of fluid intake.
Do not drink large amounts of caffeinated beverages such as sodas and coffee to try to prevent dehydration as large amounts of caffeine can reduce your urine output and lead to dehydration. If you feel like you are getting dehydrated or you are at risk, call your doctor! Your doctor can treat vomiting and diarrhea with medications and this will reduce the risk of becoming dehydrated. They also may give you certain fluids or oral rehydrating solutions depending on your condition. In some cases, fluids may need to be given to you intravenously. You should always check with your doctor first before you attempt to take anything such as salt tablets or your own oral hydrating solution to help with dehydration.

Helpful Tips For Acne Control
Acne is a topic that I am very familiar with as I am one of the many people who have struggled with it during many times in my life, especially during my school years. This made it very difficult for me at times to be around my friends or to concentrate on my studies. There were times when I did not even want to go to school or attend social events because of acne. As I think back, I wonder if I could of done more to prevent the flare-ups and agony that the acne caused. Here are a few suggestions that might help you to take better care of your skin and hopefully prevent acne from happening in the first place.
You should clean your skin with a mild cleanser twice a day, once in the morning and before you go to bed. If you exercise and build up a sweat, gently clean it off your skin. Make sure that you avoid using strong soaps and rough pads as hard scrubbing of your skin can make acne worse.
Make sure that you wash your entire face and rinse thoroughly. You can remove make-up by gently washing your face with mild soap and water. Always check with your doctor before using an astringent.
* Make sure to wash your hair on a regular basis and if you have extra oily hair, you may want to wash it more frequently.
* This may be difficult, but do not squeeze pimples or zits as this can cause acne scars to your skin.
* Stay out of the sun as there are many acne medications on the market that make you more prone to getting sunburn. There are people who believe that the sun will help acne because the redness from the sunburn helps to make it less visible. The trouble with this is that too much sun will age your skin and increase your chances of developing skin cancer. If you are going to be out in the sun, use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and try to shade yourself as much as possible.
* Buy make-up and products for your hair care that are non-acnegenic. These products are specially made so that they do not cause acne. You should also purchase products that are oil free.
* Avoid articles such as backpacks and other sports equipment that are going to be rubbing against your skin as much as possible as this irritates acne.
* Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss which acne treatment options are best for you and make sure that you take your medications as described. Call your doctor if you notice that your medicine is making your acne worse.

Teaching Your Kids To Eat Healthy
As a parent, one of our main priorities should be to make sure that our kids are developing healthy eating habits. It used to be that there were not a lot of overweight kids, but unfortunately that has changed and now we see overweight kids wherever we go. The main reason behind this is that today’s kids are not getting the proper amount of exercise that they need to stay healthy. Instead of playing outside, they are shut away in their rooms playing video games and watching television. They have also made convenience foods part of their routine diets, instead of eating more healthy home cooked meals. It has become much more difficult to establish healthy eating habits for our children.
Our main job as parents is to make sure that we work our hardest to keep our kids healthy. The problem is that nowadays, there are more unhealthy food options available to our kids then ever before and this makes it real difficult to stay on track. We have to do everything within our power to keep them eating healthy and make sure that they get enough exercise. Here are a few tips to help you accomplish this.
Make sure that you choose and provide them with healthy snack options such as fresh fruits and vegetables instead of offering them chips or candies. You might ask, “ How do I do this?’ Well, the answer is simple, do not buy unhealthy snacks! If they are hungry enough, they will eat the healthy snack.
Try to start cooking healthy meals at home. I realize that this may be a hard task to do every night especially when both parents work and have had long hard days, but do your best. It is alright to have things such as pizza occasionally, but do not make them a routine part of your kids diet. If you do have pizza, make a fresh salad to go with it and provide a healthy dessert at the end of the meal. Try to avoid fast food restaurants as they have a lot of salty greasy food which is not good or healthy for your kids body. If you do choose to eat out, pick a place that offers healthy menu items.
Limit your kids playing time on video games and watching television. Help and encourage them to participate in sports activities and get more exercise. On Christmas and their birthdays, try to buy them sports oriented gifts such as balls, gloves, bicycles that will get them more involved in sports and physical activities.
This may seem like an impossible task to keep your kids healthy in such an unhealthy world, but this can be accomplished by your dedication and hard work as a parent and what better gift could you give your kids then the gift of helping them to get on the right track of a lifetime of healthy living.

Eating Out And Staying Healthy
Are you one of the many American families that love to eat out at your favorite restaurants? If so, then you probably think that this lifestyle is not good for a healthy diet and most of the time this assumption is right, but you can still dine out occasionally and still be able to maintain a healthy diet. What it all boils down to is making smart choices in the foods that you eat and knowing the nutritional values of the food that you need to stay happy, physically fit, mentally stable and live an active life.
The first thing that you should do while eating out is to not order a drink. It is very tempting to order a glass of beer or some other mixed beverage for dinner, but the problem with these are that they have many empty calories which are not good for your body. One of the exceptions to the rule when it comes to alcohol is wine. Red wine has been proven to actually prevent heart disease in some people. Always remember, you should only drink one glass and no more. When I go out to a restaurant, I always order a cold glass of water which is much better for your body and your wallet.
You should also not order any appetizers unless it is part of the salad bar. The problem with these foods are that they are usually high-fat foods that are not designed to fill you up and they can even cause you to crave even more high-fat foods. Some of the well known appetizers are mozzarella sticks, potato skins, and wings. Try to focus on your main course meal and if you must have an appetizer, share the single portion with your dinner guests.
Before you order your main dish, make sure that you know the ingredients in the meal. Dishes with cream sauces or high fat meats should be avoided and it is not a smart choice to order potatoes or onion rings. Instead, order some type of vegetables with your meal or just order the main course when possible.
One of the most important things is the size of your meal. If possible, try to order off the lunch menu as those portions are much smaller then the dinner portions. You should always ask your waiter for a doggie bag at the beginning of your meal. This way, you can split your meal in half and not be tempted to eat the whole entire meal in one setting. Usually, you will get enough food for two or three portions in one meal.
The last thing and probably one of the hardest things that you should do is to skip dessert. If you feel that you must order dessert, then split the single portion with your dinner party or split it in half. Some of the desserts that are served in restaurants contain more calories then your whole meal, so think twice before you decide to indulge yourself at the end of your meal. There are times when all of us tend to cheat a little when it comes to eating and that is completely normal, but healthy eating requires a lot of will power and commitment.

Warning Signs For Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a condition that develops in the body over a period of time. This condition is sometimes referred to as the non-insulin dependent diabetes. The cause of it is that your body becomes resistant to the effects of the insulin that it is producing and this increases your blood sugar levels. Two of the largest risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are your family history and being overweight.
The definition of insulin is a hormone in your body that is produced by the pancreas. Typically, the insulin levels vary in relation to the amount of glucose in your body. When you consume food, the level will increase and if you are not eating, it will decrease. Insulin moves the glucose to different areas in your body. If you have more glucose then your body can handle, the excess amount will be stored in your liver and it will be released when it is needed. It is a difficult balance between the pancreas, liver, insulin and glucose.
If you develop type 2 diabetes, one of two things will take place. Either your pancreas will stop producing the proper amounts of insulin that your body requires or you will become resistant to insulin. No matter which way it will go, the results will be the same, high blood sugar levels.
When something is wrong with your body, it has ways of signaling you. It is extremely important that you familiarize yourself with the symptoms of type 2 diabetes because the sooner that you can catch it, the less damage that it will do to your body. Here are some things to look for in type 2 diabetes.
One of the most overlooked symptoms of type 2 diabetes is extreme fatigue. This is because people are so busy with their jobs and lifestyle and they have so much stress in their everyday lives that they automatically think that this is why they are so tired all the time. If you feel tired and sleepy all the time, even after a good nights sleep, then you should see your doctor for a checkup and make sure everything is all right.
Another sign is a drastic change in your weight. Maybe you feel hungry all of the time and this causes you to eat more and gain weight. The excess fat that you have in your body causes it to become more resistant to the effects of insulin that is produced. You may also eat more then normal and end up losing weight. This is caused by your muscles not getting enough glucose to function properly.
Your eyes can also be effected by type 2 diabetes. You can have blurry vision as high blood sugar levels pulls fluid from tissues such as the lens of your eyes making it difficult for them to focus. Most of these vision problems will go away once diabetes is treated, but in some cases blindness can occur if left untreated.
Diabetes also effects healing in your body. You may have frequent infections or they may be slow healing infections and cuts. Increased yeast infections is also a warning sign for type 2 diabetes.
Your teeth and gums can also be effected by diabetes. If you notice that your gums are becoming red and swollen or inflamed, go and get checked by your doctor as diabetes increases your chances of developing these issues as well as problems with the bones that hold your teeth in place.

Take Care Of Your Teeth
When you meet new people, what are the first two things that you notice about them? The answer is their smile and teeth. Healthy teeth can tell you a lot about one’s personality. When you choose not to take care of your teeth, you pay the price with rotten teeth and bad breath and this can have a negative effect on your life as well as the people that you are around.
It is a known fact that people who take excellent care of their teeth tend to be successful and flourish in their careers. Not all people take care of their teeth in the same way, but what matters in the end is that the healthier your teeth are, the better you look to other people.
Healthy teeth are also much better to chew your food properly. In order for a person to have good digestion, the food must be chewed right or it will be much harder to digest and it could lead to other problems. Also, a person with healthy teeth can speak much clearer and this gives them added confidence.
People who have bad teeth usually do not like to speak in public and they tend to shy away from people and not communicate very much with them. Although some inherit bad teeth from their genetics, there are ways for dentists and orthodontists to reshape and improve crooked, ugly teeth.
Another important reason to take care of your teeth is that it prevents plaque formation from forming which is described as a clear film that sticks to the surface of your teeth . You might ask,” What is so bad about this”? Well, the fact is that this film is very sticky and like a magnet
it attracts bacteria that sticks to it.
Bacteria that are sugary sweet are attracted to the sugar that is stuck on your teeth like ants attracted to your picnic. When you eat candies or other sweets the sugary substance left in your mouth breaks down the sugar into acid.
This acid is responsible for eating away the enamel that is on your teeth and this leads to holes in your teeth which are referred to as cavities. If you have too much plaque, it can also cause a disease called gingivitis which is a gum disease that will cause your gums to be red, sore and swollen.
One of the first indicators of gingivitis is easy bleeding around the gums, even when you gently brush your teeth. Taking the best care possible of your teeth is the best prevention for cavities
and gum disease.
Poor dental care can also result in terrible tooth aches. If you have experienced one of these like a lot of us, then you know what I am talking about. These aches can make it very difficult to eat and to be around other people.
You need to brush properly everyday in order to prevent bacteria from forming. Brush at least twice a day and stick to it as this will prevent the plaque from building up on your teeth which
will eventually lead to cavities. I hope that you found this information useful and if you would like more information, please check out my healthy living web site where you will find some great information on how to live a long and healthy life.

Skin Is Effected By Lack Of Sleep
Did you know that not getting enough sleep not only has negative results on your body, but it also effects your skin in many ways.
Our bodies need sleep and this is essential for good health. When we sleep, this gives our bodies time to restore energy and rebuild body tissue and cells including skin tissue and cells.
There are several adverse effects on our bodies from lack of sleep. Some of these include tiredness, being cranky and being unable to focus our minds and concentrate on our daily tasks. Short term lack of sleep causes little physical harm, but when it occurs on a long term basis, it can lead to serious health problems and it can also damage your skin.
When our bodies get at least 8 hours of sleep, it not only benefits our health, it also brings benefits to our skin. One of these benefits is that it improves the texture of the skin and it gives your skin a new glow.
During sleep, our skin is being renewed and restored. This takes away some of the stress and harmful effects that we have obtained from daily living. By not getting a sufficient amount of sleep, we are robbing our bodies of it’s natural process for self-renewal.
It is a proven fact that if we do not get enough sleep, our overall health will be effected
including the health of our skin. One of the most noticeable effects on our skin from lack of sleep is the area beneath our eyes. This area of our eyes is one of the most delicate areas on our bodies
and the skin here is much thinner then other areas of skin.
The adverse effects from not sleeping on your eyes include dark circles, puffy eye bags, fine lines and wrinkles. There are some specialized skin care products and treatments available
that can help with some of these problems, but that can also be expensive and time consuming.
The best thing that you can do is prevent this from happening in the first place. As I said earlier,
there are products that will help, but they will not be a complete cure.
We have always heard that adults need at least 8 hours of sleep, but as we all know, some of us can survive on 6 or 7 hours rest. Eventually, lack of sleep will show on your body, especially the older you get.
There are many things that can prevent you from getting the proper amount of sleep. One thing is the heavy workload that you have to deal and all the stress that you have in your life.
You may have special need kids who need care during the night hours or your teen kids may be coming home late at night and waking you up. Some of us may have our aging parents living
with us who have to get up during the night and this breaks our rest. These are just a few of the factors that may contribute to your lack of sleep. The sad part is that there is really nothing that we can do to eliminate a lot of these situations. I hope that you found this information helpful and if you want more, please visit my healthy living web site where you will find great information on how to live a healthier and longer life.
