Learn To Recognize the Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration is a topic that I can readily identify with at this time as my wonderful 80 year old mother has been fighting cancer for two years now and is attempting her third round of chemotherapy, but has recently been hospitalized from complications due to severe dehydration. It is very important for people fighting cancer to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of dehydration before it leads to serious health issues.

People taking chemotherapy often have several side effects such as vomiting and diarrhea and this can lead to dehydration. If this occurs, they should be closely monitored before the dehydration becomes severe.

The definition of dehydration is the loss of body fluids that can occur because of vomiting, diarrhea, sweating heavily, and being exposed to the sun for long periods of time. These fluids are essential for our bodies to work properly and without them, our bodies cannot function the way they are supposed to.

There are several signs of dehydration such as the following:

* dizziness, general feeling of weakness
* less urine output
* dry mouth
* thirst
* difficulty in swallowing dry foods
* dry skin/lips

If you experience a small amount of urine output or none at all during a 12 hour time period or if your urine is dark in color or you experience dizziness or fainting when you stand up, you should call your doctor and get checked. Dehydration can also effect your mind and throw you into a state of confusion.

One of the best ways to prevent dehydration is to try to drink plenty of fluids. This may sound simple, but when you are fighting nausea and diarrhea,, it can become a difficult task to drink properly. Try to drink small amounts to a time or a few ounces of clear liquid every 15 to 30 minutes until you are able to keep larger amounts down. Try ice chunks as they can be good for a dry mouth and also for small amounts of fluid intake.

Do not drink large amounts of caffeinated beverages such as sodas and coffee to try to prevent dehydration as large amounts of caffeine can reduce your urine output and lead to dehydration. If you feel like you are getting dehydrated or you are at risk, call your doctor! Your doctor can treat vomiting and diarrhea with medications and this will reduce the risk of becoming dehydrated. They also may give you certain fluids or oral rehydrating solutions depending on your condition. In some cases, fluids may need to be given to you intravenously. You should always check with your doctor first before you attempt to take anything such as salt tablets or your own oral hydrating solution to help with dehydration.

Helpful Tips For Acne Control

Acne is a topic that I am very familiar with as I am one of the many people who have struggled with it during many times in my life, especially during my school years. This made it very difficult for me at times to be around my friends or to concentrate on my studies. There were times when I did not even want to go to school or attend social events because of acne. As I think back, I wonder if I could of done more to prevent the flare-ups and agony that the acne caused. Here are a few suggestions that might help you to take better care of your skin and hopefully prevent acne from happening in the first place.

You should clean your skin with a mild cleanser twice a day, once in the morning and before you go to bed. If you exercise and build up a sweat, gently clean it off your skin. Make sure that you avoid using strong soaps and rough pads as hard scrubbing of your skin can make acne worse.
Make sure that you wash your entire face and rinse thoroughly. You can remove make-up by gently washing your face with mild soap and water. Always check with your doctor before using an astringent.

* Make sure to wash your hair on a regular basis and if you have extra oily hair, you may want to wash it more frequently.

* This may be difficult, but do not squeeze pimples or zits as this can cause acne scars to your skin.

* Stay out of the sun as there are many acne medications on the market that make you more prone to getting sunburn. There are people who believe that the sun will help acne because the redness from the sunburn helps to make it less visible. The trouble with this is that too much sun will age your skin and increase your chances of developing skin cancer. If you are going to be out in the sun, use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and try to shade yourself as much as possible.

* Buy make-up and products for your hair care that are non-acnegenic. These products are specially made so that they do not cause acne. You should also purchase products that are oil free.

* Avoid articles such as backpacks and other sports equipment that are going to be rubbing against your skin as much as possible as this irritates acne.

* Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss which acne treatment options are best for you and make sure that you take your medications as described. Call your doctor if you notice that your medicine is making your acne worse.

Teaching Your Kids To Eat Healthy

As a parent, one of our main priorities should be to make sure that our kids are developing healthy eating habits. It used to be that there were not a lot of overweight kids, but unfortunately that has changed and now we see overweight kids wherever we go. The main reason behind this is that today’s kids are not getting the proper amount of exercise that they need to stay healthy. Instead of playing outside, they are shut away in their rooms playing video games and watching television. They have also made convenience foods part of their routine diets, instead of eating more healthy home cooked meals. It has become much more difficult to establish healthy eating habits for our children.

Our main job as parents is to make sure that we work our hardest to keep our kids healthy. The problem is that nowadays, there are more unhealthy food options available to our kids then ever before and this makes it real difficult to stay on track. We have to do everything within our power to keep them eating healthy and make sure that they get enough exercise. Here are a few tips to help you accomplish this.

Make sure that you choose and provide them with healthy snack options such as fresh fruits and vegetables instead of offering them chips or candies. You might ask, “ How do I do this?’ Well, the answer is simple, do not buy unhealthy snacks! If they are hungry enough, they will eat the healthy snack.

Try to start cooking healthy meals at home. I realize that this may be a hard task to do every night especially when both parents work and have had long hard days, but do your best. It is alright to have things such as pizza occasionally, but do not make them a routine part of your kids diet. If you do have pizza, make a fresh salad to go with it and provide a healthy dessert at the end of the meal. Try to avoid fast food restaurants as they have a lot of salty greasy food which is not good or healthy for your kids body. If you do choose to eat out, pick a place that offers healthy menu items.

Limit your kids playing time on video games and watching television. Help and encourage them to participate in sports activities and get more exercise. On Christmas and their birthdays, try to buy them sports oriented gifts such as balls, gloves, bicycles that will get them more involved in sports and physical activities.

This may seem like an impossible task to keep your kids healthy in such an unhealthy world, but this can be accomplished by your dedication and hard work as a parent and what better gift could you give your kids then the gift of helping them to get on the right track of a lifetime of healthy living.
